No Twonky service after update to 8.4?

Post by BugFixX » Wed Feb 08, 2017 10:44 pm

Hi,

I've updated my Twonky server from 8.3 to 8.4. The first bad thing is that I have to create a Lynx account! WTF? Why?
After that I figured out, that there is no Windows service anymore. Therefore I have to login to the Winodws server to start Twonky! WTF? Why?
I tried to add Twonky as a service via nssm.exe but it doesn't work. It seems that the service doesn't connect to Lynx to login and verify the license.
I tried all three exe files (twonkyserver.exe, twonkystarter.exe and twonkytray.exe).
How can I configure Twonky to start automatically without to login to Windows?
I use Windows Server Essentials 2012R2.

Best,
Andreas

This is the official answer from Twonky support:

"Hi,

we are sorry, but we can no longer support the service version on the Windows Server

Twonky can now only be run on login in the autostart.

Supported OS is Win7 and Win10.

Sorry
The Twonky Team"

And this is my official answer:

A server application that doesn't support server operation systems is not a server application. And no service mode anymore? Are you kidding?

Bye bye Twonky!
Will use Minim Server in the future.

Today I updated from 8.3 to 8.5......

I PAID for a server system for streaming my content within my home network (TVs and so on).....

Now, as soon as I log off from server, Twonky shuts down and there is no streaming in my whole house anymore.

NO information given! Registration required! Services shut down!

YOU BROKE MY PAID SOFTWARE! Are you serious?????

Unsintall done.... now re-installing 8.3 and NEVER update again!!!

THANK YOU FOR NOTHING!

I have to agree - the new system sucks. I am using Twonky under Linux - I am seriously considering rolling back to 8.3 due to this crazy start up process.

And Twonky... Why does the forum say "You cannot make another post so soon after your last." when all I am trying to do is help people? The required time interval between posts is excessive.

Is this helpful: https://github.com/kohsuke/winsw ?

It's a wrapper service that you configure with whatever .exe that you want to be run when your machine starts.

Edit: The server seems to be built in to Twonky according to this FAQ, but you need to run a command line to *install* it:

How can I install Twonky Server 8.4 and beyond as a Windows Service?

To install Twonky Server as a system service on Windows you have to open a commandline interface as administrator and execute the command "twonkystarter.exe -installandstart" in the Twonky Server installation directory.
